How to Choose a Rosary: Materials, Meaning and Gift Ideas

A rosary is one of the most personal gifts there is. It gets carried in a pocket, kept on a nightstand, held in a hospital waiting room and passed down in families. Choosing the right one comes down to three things: who it's for, how they'll use it and what it should say.

What makes a traditional rosary

A traditional Catholic rosary has five decades. Starting from the crucifix, there's one bead for the Our Father, three beads for the Hail Mary, then one more single bead before the centerpiece, often a medal of Mary or a saint. From there, five groups of ten beads, the decades, are separated by single beads for the Our Father. That's 59 beads in all, plus the crucifix and centerpiece.

Choose the material for the person

Wood is warm, light and made for everyday use. Olive wood and dark walnut tones suit men, grandfathers and anyone who prays on the go.

Stone has more weight in the hand. Rose quartz is a gentle gift for a mother or grandmother. Black onyx is a strong, simple choice for a man.

Pearl is the classic choice for a First Communion, a baptism or a wedding.

Crystal catches the light with every bead. It's elegant enough for a special occasion and still simple enough for daily prayer.

For a First Communion or confirmation

Choose smaller beads in white or pearl, with a simple crucifix. It's often a child's first rosary, so pick one that can be kept for life. Write the date and a short blessing in the card.

For a man

Most men want something sturdy and understated: darker beads, solid links and a crucifix that doesn't look fragile. Many keep it in a jacket pocket or hang it in the car.

Caring for a rosary

Keep it in a small pouch or box so the links don't tangle. Hold it by the beads, not the chain, and keep wooden rosaries away from water. Many families also ask their priest to bless a new rosary before giving it.
