First Communion Rosary: How to Choose the Right One

A First Communion rosary is often the first piece of faith a child owns. Many keep it for life, bring it to their Confirmation, and one day pass it on. That's a lot to ask of a small string of beads, so it's worth choosing well. Here's what to look for.

What makes a good First Communion rosary

  • Size that fits small hands. Look for beads around 5 to 6 mm. Full-size adult rosaries with 8 mm beads are heavy for a 7 or 8 year old.
  • A sturdy chain. Children drop, tug and twist their rosaries. Linked chain or strong cord holds up better than very fine wire.
  • A light color. White and pearl tones are traditional for First Communion, matching the white dress or suit and the idea of a pure first encounter with the Eucharist.
  • A clear crucifix and centerpiece. A Miraculous Medal or a chalice center is classic and helps a child find their place when they pray.

Our First Communion rosary picks

Pair it with an engraved wooden rosary box so it has a safe place to live, and doesn't end up tangled at the bottom of a drawer.

Who gives the First Communion rosary?

Traditionally, godparents or grandparents give it. In some families the parents give it on the morning of the celebration. There's no strict rule. What matters is that someone takes a moment to explain what the rosary is for, and ideally prays the first decade with the child.

Teaching a child to use it

Start small. One decade a day, with an Our Father, ten Hail Marys and a Glory Be, is plenty for a seven-year-old. When they're ready, our step-by-step guide on how to pray the Rosary walks through the full prayer and the mysteries for each day.

From First Communion to Confirmation

Many families give a second, more grown-up piece at Confirmation: a cross necklace, a saint medal or a stone rosary. Browse our baptism and Confirmation gifts or read our Confirmation gift guide for ideas.
